The Emotional Journey of Infertility and the Role of Couples Therapy in Temecula CA

INFERTILE

This yellow highlighted word is the memory that flashes in my mind when I think about my own journey with infertility. My partner and I had come home exhausted from a long day of work and checked the mail, like we always do when we get home, and this was the first word I saw highlighted on an unexpected letter of lab results that got delivered to us that day. There was no time for getting myself mentally or emotionally prepared for the appointment to go over the results, no soft or gentle delivery of the news from a doctor, no way to ask any questions for treatment options. Just a cold, black and white letter in the mail with the yellow highlighted diagnosis of infertility at 9:37pm on a Wednesday night.

Couples Therapy in Temecula CA with a therapist who understands Infertility

Hi, I’m Jackie - a couples therapist here with Inland Empire Couples Counseling. That little blurb you just read, it’s a tiny piece of my own journey with infertility. When I think back on that day and the days (and years) that followed - I recognize that I needed someone who understood the words on that paper, not only for me to grieve what I had just found out but also someone who could help my partner and I stay connected during this time. So that is why I am here writing this to you - (1) I want to tell you that you are not alone and (2) I want to offer you and your partner hope that you can get through this together.

If you’re ready to reconnect with your partner, please reach out today! We can help you with in-person marriage counseling in Temecula, CA and Riverside, CA. We also offer virtual counseling to any resident in California.

You are not alone in struggling with infertility in Temecula Valley

So first let me say this: You are not alone. You might be struggling with a roller coaster of emotions (shock, confusion, anger, sadness, despair, etc.), difficulty thinking about how to manage this problem (i.e. fertility treatments, adoption, fostering, having no children, etc.), and seeing this cause stress in the relationship (i.e. feeling disconnected, struggling to communicate thoughts and feelings, being on two different pages about how to move forward, etc.)

I see your pain and I get it: An experienced couples therapist in Temecula CA

Second, you and your partner can get through this together. I’m not saying it will be easy or painless - what I am saying is that it is possible to move through this, without it destroying your relationship. The thing that I want to offer you is what truly helped me and what I would do over again- connecting with a safe person that could hear my story, sit with my pain, and help me learn ways to process and grieve this loss with my partner. If you’re not sure what a “safe” person looks like or don’t have access to that at this time - I want to suggest to you the idea of therapy

In couples therapy, you and your partner can learn healthy ways of coping with grief and loss (both individually and together), develop open communication and emotional support with each other to be able to express your thoughts and feelings, and to process options or create solutions together about how to grow your family. If you are interested in couples therapy, we’d love to help!
