How to help our kids when my partner with C-PTSD is in a period of extreme emotional distress
This is part of our Consult a Therapist Series: Parenting Concerns where Rebecca Williams, LMFT discusses user submitted questions about how you can help your children and be there for them. This week we’re talking about how you can help your child(ren) if either you or your partner is experiencing complex-PTSD and is having an emotionally distressing episode.
The first thing you should know is that we’re here for you and your family. Rebecca has come up with a couple tips to help your children navigate these episodes in a way that doesn’t disrupt their lives and helps them understand what is happening while also protecting them. The very best thing you can do is talk to your children about what’s happening in an age appropriate way and protect their childhood. Often times parents will accidentally put caregiving tasks onto a child and that can actually be pretty harmful for them.
