What To Expect From Online Couples Counseling

Consult A Therapist Series

Have you thought about doing Couples Counseling Online but aren't sure what to expect? How does online couples counseling work? Marriage and Family Therapists Rebecca Williams and Aliah Hasan with Inland Empire Couples Counseling will let you know what to expect from your Online Couples Counseling experience. Some of what we have to say is specific to how we work with couples at Inland Empire Couples Counseling and much of what we have to say about online couples counseling should apply to any good online marriage counseling. If you are looking for online marriage therapy, make sure your therapist has a plan for assessment, listens to what you want and need from your couples counseling experience, and has a secure video option available for your online couples counseling.

What to Expect from Online Couples Counseling

Your therapist will guide you:

  • You will get some initial assessments to fill out

  • Your therapist will guide you through the first session to best get to know you and your partner

  • The more your therapist can get to know you, the better they will be able to help you

  • This is the same process we go through for in-person couple therapy. Online Couples Therapy has the same process and structure.

Get to know your goals and problems:

  • Talking through your history and current relationship will help you and your therapist identify what problems need addressed

  • Collaborating with your partner and therapist to discover what goals you wish to achieve

  • Again, this is a hallmark of any good couples therapy. With online couples therapy, our quality doesn’t suffer.

What you’ve tried already:

  • Your therapist will talk to you about what you have already tried to best tailor the sessions to what you need.

  • Make sure to let your therapist know what you have found that helps and what doesn’t help

Expectations:

  • Being open and honest with your partner and therapist about what you want from therapy

  • Your therapist will walk you through what to expect for your online couples counseling sessions

  • If you start meeting with one of our therapists and realize it isn’t a good fit, be honest. We will make recommendations to you about other options you have to get the help you need

How we’ll know when we’re done:

  • By setting initial goals and expectations, it will be easy to identify when you are finished with therapy

  • Therapy is not meant to be a never-ending cycle. It is to help you reach the goals you desire so your relationship can be in a healthy place

Secure Video Option for Online Couples Therapy:

  • We send a private, secure link to the email address we have on file every week before your session. The link will be different each week

  • The video link we send is secure and HIPAA compliant - that means our systems meet the requirements of security and encryption for healthcare settings

  • If you are given the option of phone or video, always select video. It will help establish better communication and relationship between you, your partner, and your therapist

  • Doing couples therapy via online video can allow you to feel more comfortable with being at your home environment versus in a therapist’s office

  • Video appointments allow our therapists to better read you and your partner’s body language as you interact with each other
